For many people not related to music, the expressions “acoustic guitar” and “classical guitar” sound the same. But, as you know, there are several varieties of acoustic guitars, and classical guitars are just a small group of instruments.
So, the classical acoustic is the alma mater of all musical instruments such as a guitar. It features a wide neck and soft sound. The type has 6 strings, usually nylon. Quite often, novice musicians ask themselves: which strings are better for an acoustic guitar, for a novice guitarist? And the answer here is simple – those that were bundled initially. If you purchased a guitar with nylon strings, installing metal strings can damage the neck.
Non-Classical Acoustic Guitar
The main features that distinguish non-classical acoustics: the presence of a large body and at the same time a relatively narrow neck; use exclusively metal strings. Due to these characteristics, the sound of non-classics is bright, rich, loud and sonorous. It is often played as a mediator (in contrast to the classics, where it is more convenient to play with fingers); for this, a drop-shaped protective plate, a pickguard, is installed on the case. Finger technique is also quite allowed, there is even a special direction – fingerstyle.Non-classical guitars became popular in the 20th century. They differ among themselves by the type of body – western (dreadnought) and jumbo. The usual classic case could not meet changing requirements, namely to withstand the installation of metal strings. Christopher Martin changed the location of the guitar springs, strengthened the deck, giving it increased rigidity, and added an anchor bolt to attach the neck to the enlarged body. So there was a “dreadnought”, which became the first improved version of a classical guitar. Such a guitar was often used to play country music; from here came the second name – western guitar.Folk musicians sometimes use guitars with a slightly smaller body (like the classics). Such cases are called differently: folk, concert, vintage. There is another version of the body – jumbo. Jumbo, in essence, differs from the dreadnought in a larger body and a narrower “waist”.
